Qoyllur Rit’i Pilgrimage and Corpus Christi in Cuzco

Off the beaten path 5 day/ 4 nights program
"Full Moon is up here, we all are Qoyllur Rit'i" (Old Inka mith)

Located at 4.800m above sea level in the southern Andes, about 160km east of Cusco, the Qolqepunku glacier (the ¨Silver Gate¨ in Quechua) was sacred hundreds of years before the Incas and is still revered today by many Andean people. Every year there are many who make a strenous pilgrimage up the mountain to be blessed and perhaps gather holy ice during the celebration of Qoyllur Rit’i (Snow’s Star).

The event merges native (Qoyllur Rit’i) and Catholic (Señor de Qoyllur Rit’i) beliefs and is the largest indigenous pilgrimage in the Western Hemisphere. The date for Qoyllur Rit’i is every year during the night of the full moon one week before Corpus Christi (another fascinating celebration in Cusco).

Few foreigners or tourists attend this fascinating, unique and authentic celebration. We offer our clients this off the beaten path program, with the possibility to take part in or at least attend to this important ritual event for 3 or more days, hiking and camping in a small farm in the Sinakara Valley, just 20 minutes walking time to the Sanctuary.
