NORTH PERU FIXED DEPARTURE TOUR
9 days/ 8 nights, starts every Saturday
Often ignored by travellers, Peru’s north coast is possibly the most important archaeological area in the whole of the Americas. Even though the Incas have taken the lion’s share of archaeological attention in Peru, the prior cultures of the north coast were at least as important, and survived for a much longer period of time. A visit to Chiclayo, Trujillo and Cajamarca is an unforgettable cultural experience.
Day 1 (Sat):
Arrival in Lima, reception in the airport and transfer to hotel in Miraflores. In the afternoon optional group city tour of modern and colonial Lima. Hotel overnight.
Day 2 (Sun):
Private transfer to bus station for regular 9 hours bus ride to Trujillo, along the Panamericana road to the north of Lima. Reception and private transfer to hotel in Trujillo. (B).

Day 3 (Mon):
Group tour, including the Huaca del Dragón and the Chan Chan ruins: The Chimú culture emerged when the Moche culture died out, and built Chan Chán, the largest pre-Hispanic city in Peru. Although the Spanish saw the walls of the city when sailing along the coast, Chan Chán had been abandoned before their arrival, as the Incas had transferred the Chimú population to a new settlement as punishment for their resistance to Inca rule. Tour contunues to Huanchaco beach, to see the “Caballitos de Totora”, used for fishing since centuies in the area. Transfer to hotel, rest of day free to enjoy Trujillo, or an unforgettable sea food or fish lunch in one of the many Huanchaco restaurants. (B)
Day 4 (Tue):
Group city tour of beautiful colonial Trujillo to the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna (the Sun and the Moon temples), buildings that were once part of the old City of Moche. According to legend, the Huaca of the Sun was built in only three days, employing 250 thousand men and using close to 70 million adobe bricks. It is approximately 20 metres high, 345 metres long and 160 metres width, thus considered the largest Huaca in the country. The Huaca of the Moon, where astonishing murals depicting the rituals of the Moches, can be appreciated, is composed of superposed temples. Beautiful polychrome murals can be seen on its walls, whose figures include the image of the God Ai-Apaek. It has an approximate extension of 290 metres from a north to South and of 210 metres from East to West. Time in the afternoon for optional excursions in the area. Hotel. (B).

Day 5 (Wed):
Transfer to bus station to take a comfortable public bus for a 3 hours drive to Chiclayo. Reception in Chiclayo, transfer to hotel. Chiclayo is a rather bustling modern city, famous for its excellent regional food. Afternoon at leisure, recommended optional tour to the Pimentel coastal village, where fishermen sell the fish they caught navigating on their ancestral “caballitos de totora”. Along the beach there are also several good fish restaurants. Another very interesting experience can be to visit the surprising Witch Market. Witchcraft is very popular in the north of Perú, where ill people go rather to see a witch instead of a doctor, or to solve love affairs, etc. Hotel overnight. (B)

Day 6 (Tue)
Group tour to the Sipan Lord Tombs and local museum, to the southeast of Chiclayo, where an incredible gold and silver jewels treasure was discovered by archeologists. The fabulous treasures found in the tombs of Sipán are now on display in the new and very good Tumbas Reales museum in Lambayeque. Sipán is one of the richest tombs discovered since King Tut´s, containing extraordinary gold, silver and gilded copper items. The treasures of the Señor de Sicán are housed in the Sican museum in Ferreñafe, and are another of Peru’s star attractions. Return to Chiclayo. In the afternoon, tour to nearby Lambayeque town, to visit the superb Tumbas Reales museum. Return to Chiclayo. Hotel overnight. (B).
Day 7 (Fri)
Transfer to the bus station to take a comfortable public bus for an 8 hour ride crossing the Andes to Cajamarca, a beautiful colonial city. Reception and transfer to Laguna Seca SPA and Thermal Baths Resort Hotel. Arrival in the evening, free time to relax and enjoy the thermal baths and the SPA.
The city of Cajamarca holds an important place in the history of the conquest by the Spaniards of South America and Peru. Although previously an important pre-Inca and afterwards an Inca city, it became a typical "colonial" city after the Spanish conquered it. The "Cuarto del Rescate" or "Ransom Room" is the famous site of the “compromise” between conqueror Francisco Pizarro and the Inca Atahualpa where Pizarro promised to free Atahualpa if he filled the room, once with gold and twice with silver. Atahualpa had the room filled, but Pizarro broke his promise and subsequently killed Atahualpa in the main square. Cajamarca, as well as being a beautiful and pleasant city has many tourist attractions, both in the city itself and in the surrounding area. Hotel overnight (B)
Day 8 (Sat)
City tour of colonial Cajamarca, including the “Ransom Room” and the so called Otuzco Windows (pre-Inca tombs). In the afternoon visit to the impressive Cumbemayo stone landscape and the amazing zigzagging aqueducts carved in the rocks by a pre-Inca culture. Late afternoon at leisure in the pleasant Laguna Seca Resort hotel. Overnight. (B).
