GOLF IN PERU
Peru is a golfer's paradise. If you are fortunate enough to be a member or a guest, you very seldom have to request a tee time and can usually go off immediately. Otherwise, Andean Origins Golf Tour Operator will arrange a tee time for you. It never rains in Lima and Trujillo, seldom in Arequipa, and the weather is always perfect for golf with almost no wind. Classes are readily available with professional instructors. As long as Tiger, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus don’t find out our secret, we should be able to enjoy our golfer's paradise for some time.
Peru boasts a lot of firsts and golf is no exception
Machu Picchu is the No. 1 Wonder of the World in the western hemisphere. Peru is the original home of the potato, the tomato, the largest corn grains; is first in the export of fish, fresh and frozen asparagus; it hosts 84 of the known 104 ecosystems in the world; has the largest mine in the world (Antamina); and has more varieties of hummingbirds just in the Machu Picchu reserve than the entire United States. The Sipán Lord treasures, housed in the spectacular Tumbas Reales museum in Lambayeque (in the Trujillo/ Chiclayo archaeological northern area), are as astonishing as the ones of Tut Ank Amon in Egipt, and the Titicaca lake, shared with Bolivia, is the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. The Amazon river is the longest in the world, and at the same time is the largest river by volume, with total river flow greater than all the other top ten largest rivers flowing into the ocean combined; it has its origins in the Mismi mount in the Arequipa highlands.
The spectacular Peruvian Gastronomy. Almost unknown until recently, Peruvian Cuisine is slowly but steadily conquering the palates of the most renowned chefs worldwide. So much, a world gastronomy tour is now unthinkable without a succulent stop in South America's culinary capital: Lima. Peru's wild choice of fresh ingredients and the gentle blend of immigrant traditions -such as Spanish, African, Chinese, or Japanese- have created one of the World's most unique and delicious cuisines.
When you sit down to a meal in Peru today, you may not know that you are experiencing the result of a fascinating evolution of foods and cultures. Enjoy!
The highest 18 hole golf course in the world is in Peru. It is situated in La Oroya, 12,375 ft. a.s.l. (3,750 m.) three hours east of Lima in the central Andes. Originally built by the Cerro de Pasco Corporation to entertain its foreign mining engineers and visitors back in the 1940's, it continues as an active course and is open to the public. With the thin air at this altitude, even you would exceed Tiger Woods' best drives, for sure. They originally named it Club El Soroche, which means, “high altitude sickness”.
Recently, a new 9 hole course was inaugurated in the heart of the Amazon outside of the port city of Iquitos. A snake pit had to be removed from the fairway on the fourth hole to make way for the new golfers. It is open to the public, and boasts young, attractive female caddies.
There are now public courses in Peru. In fact due to the reduced demand for the sport, it took a long time to be so far. Between Lima Golf, Los Inkas, La Planicie, Villa and the other Lima clubs, there are not more than 2000 active golfers. But things start slowly to change.
South of the city in an old beach resort called San Bartolo, there is the Cruz de Hueso 9 hole golf course played practically until now on desert soil. The players are given a small patch of artificial turf which one is permitted to place their ball on at each new position in order to facilitate the next stroke. But from next year on the course will be developed to a regular 9 hole golf course with grass greens and fairways, and a golf school, open to the public.
And the above mentioned La Oroya golf club, highest in the Americas, welcomes all golf visitors who want to play in their challenging 9 hole golf course, not only due to the altitude...

Up until ten or fifteen years ago, women usually played amongst themselves and were not allowed to play Saturday mornings, the most popular period for the men. Children were not to be seen nor heard. Nowadays, there is no sexual nor age distinction and training programs for children starting at a very early five years of age are producing some amazing talents that are competing internationally. In the Americas, Argentina takes the lead in golf development and participation, followed by Colombia, Chile, Brazil and Venezuela.
On the other hand there are serious projects to build new golf courses south of Lima, in Nazca and in Cusco, which will project the future image of Peru as a very interesting golf destination for tourists from all over the world.
