GOLF IN AREQUIPA (South Peru)
Arequipa, at 2,300m above sea level, is well-known as the "white city" because the sillar (white clay) is used for the construction of most of the colonial buildings and monuments. The city is splendidly located, in the shadow of three giant volcanoes. Chachani, at 6,075m is the highest, but it is the perfectly conical Misti that draws the attention.
Besides the architecture and museums, the countryside around Arequipa holds many attractions for the visitor, like the colonial Molino de Sabandia watermill, the petroglyphs at Toro Muerto and other attractions, including the relatively easy climb up the El Misti volcano. The Colca Canyon offers superb landscapes, with agricultural terraces and snow-covered mountains, villages with narrow streets and ornate churches, and the dizzying Colca Canyon, deeper as the Grand Canyon and an excellent place to see the giant condors.
The oldest golf club in Peru is in Arequipa.
Arequipa Golf Club. When golf began to become more popular, the club was founded in 1918, and whose long-lasting institution has housed its golf course in three separate places before finally settling in the current location in Socabaya.
Because of its history, it is considered the oldest golf club in Peru and in the Pacific circuit.
The golf course has 18 holes and is par 72, with 6 greens and 12 “blacks”, which are slowly being replaced by new greens. The course also has a driving range and putting green, comfortable changing rooms, and bar and restaurant service.
