THE COLCA CANYON 2 or 3 days tour
The Colca Canyon runs for over 100km, and the average distance from the peaks of the mountains to the river below is 3,400m. Until recently, it was thought that it was the deepest canyon in the world, although it is now generally accepted that the Cotahuasi Canyon, also in the department of Arequipa, is deeper. The depth of the canyon from the Cruz del Condor to the river is approximately 1,500m, an excellent place to spot the flight of giant condors The deepest point of the canyon is beyond Cabanaconde, close to the Valley of the Volcanoes. The canyon valley is covered with thousands of pre-Inca terraces, and the scattered villages boast impressive colonial churches. There are several small hotels and lodges to meet almost all price and quality expectations.
Day 1: Departure from Arequipa along the road to Yura. The huge Chachani volcano dominates the scenery up to Pampa Cañahuas and the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserves, habitat of protected vicuñas. Then we take the side road to the Chivay Village. There are pleasant thermal baths nearby. Lodging in hotel.
Day 2: Early morning drive along the valley to Cruz del Condor to see from quite close the condors starting from the impressive canyon depths their daily flight looking for food. On the way back short visits in the Pinchollo, Maca and Yanqueque villages to the impressive colonial churches, as well as stops in the Antahuilque and Choquetico panoramic points to see pre-Inca graves and the many terraces present along the beautiful canyon lanscape. Afternoon return to Arequipa.
Note: It is possible to add an extra overnight to better enjoy the canyons stunning scenery.
